Department Overview

Design and technology is an inspiring and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.  Students acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computing and Art. Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful and innovative.  Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, students develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

During Years 7 and 8 students experience 1 hour of Design Technology per week and follow a carousel system.  All students will carry out a range of projects, including: Product Design – Wood, Product Design – Plastics, Challenge and Food.


Students can choose to study L1-2 Hospitality and Catering or Cambridge Nationals Engineering Design. Students in Years 10 and 11 are also following the GCSE Design Technology course.

GCSE Design and Technology (Eduqas)

Qualification Accreditation Number: 603/1121/6

Design and Technology offers students the opportunity to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products. Material areas covered will include, paper and board, woods, metals and polymers.  Students will develop a broad knowledge components and technologies alongside building their practical skills to develop high quality, imaginative and functional products.

L1/2 Award in Hospitality and Catering (WJEC)

Qualification Accreditation Number: 601/7703/2

The Hospitality and Catering course offers an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and extend their skills within the hospitality and catering industry.  It is a suitable qualification for those who want a broad background in this area, for those who wish to progress to further education and for those who wish to prepare for entering the world of work.

During the course, students are guided through a number of making tasks that will increase their practical skills, knowledge of function of ingredients and ability to work independently to follow a recipe.  Students will also learn about the theory behind the Hospitality and Catering industry in preparation for the non examined assessment and the exam.

Cambridge Nationals Level 1/2 Engineering Design

Qualification Accreditation Number: 601/1411/3 

Engineering Design helps students understand the processes of engineering design and how market requirements inform client briefs. Through practical activities students develop skills in computer modelling and model making and learn how to communicate design ideas effectively.

Students complete 3 coursework units alongside a fourth unit assessed by an exam. Units focus on the design, engineering and construction of products at each of the stages from design specification to prototype to final products.

How parents and carers can support learning

In Years 7 and 8 Food Technology lessons, all students will be asked to contribute towards their food ingredients and provide a container in which to take their food home.  A letter will be sent out with specific contribution cost for your son/daughter. Students will then cook a variety of different recipes developing their cooking skills as part of the DT carousel.

From Year 9 students can opt for L1/2 Hospitality and Catering and will be asked to bring their own ingredients and a suitable container on a weekly basis to complete cooking tasks.

How the DT Department actively promotes British Values through the curriculum

Throughout Design and Technology the work of a range of British designers and Architects is studied.  Students learn about British Standards, Copyright and how to patent a design.  Within Food lessons many British dishes are created, Health and Safety laws and their impact on our Hospitality industry are also studied.

Career Opportunities and Progression within Design and Technology

With a Design and Technology qualification students can go onto various areas of the creative, food and construction industries.  Opportunities include Architecture, Product Design, Engineering, Research and Food Product Development and Environmental Health.
