GCSE Certificate Evening

It was lovely to see some familiar faces this week at our Certificate Evening and to find out what life after Horbury Academy has meant for some of our previous students!

We used this opportunity to ask if there was any advice they’d like to give to our current Year 11s and captured this on film - their advice in a nutshell was to start revising now, to study hard and to make the most of the time they have left here, accompanied by a joyous “you can do this!” Many also left messages of thanks to staff and even said how they missed us all already!

To coincide with the Certificate Evening, we held a GCSE Art Exhibition for which we displayed this fabulous artwork from last year’s Year 11 art students!...

Year 10 reach final of Wakefield District football tournament!

Match report written by Team Manager, Mr ‘Jose’ Lloyd!

Our Year 10 boys were desperately unlucky to lose 5-6 against Airedale in a thrilling sudden death penalty shoot-out on Thursday evening. The final had ended 0-0 with the Horbury team coming close to winning in normal time on a number of occasions.

Twenty teams from across the Wakefield District took part and Horbury came through Group 3 unbeaten with wins against Kings (3-0), Hemsworth (2-0) and Carlton (2-0) and a draw with Kettlethorpe (1-1). Having qualified in first place, we had a bye into the semi-finals where we were able to gain revenge for a defeat earlier in the season against a strong Outwood team. This proved to be an epic end-to-end game, which saw us deservedly reach the final with Joe Perkis hitting the winner.

Seb Polowianiuk took the honours as Man of the Tournament with some excellent driving runs from midfield that saw him score five of the team’s goals. Josh Perkis was a constant thorn in the side for the opposition with his tireless running, which was rewarded with three goals. Dan Flooks put in some fine performances in a defensive midfield role and took his goal well. Josh Cameron-Edwards and Oliver Haycock shared the midfield duties with some long busting efforts, which ensured the team’s dominance in the early rounds. Cameron Goodes played every minute of the tournament and was rock solid in defence, repeatedly thwarting the opponents’ attacks. While well protected by his defence, Brook Slater still needed to pull off a number of fine saves to play his part in the team’s progress to the final.

As team manager, I was immensely proud of the way the team played and conducted themselves throughout the tournament, a real credit to Horbury Academy and well deserving of their runners-up medals.

Festive offerings…

For the next two weeks, our restaurant will be offering hot turkey baguettes with cranberry stuffing and gravy for £1.90, or for £2.10 with the addition of water or a fruit juice cuplet. There’s also the option to go large for £2.60 with a large drink and a christmas cookie or melon sleigh bells!

Then, on Wednesday 20th December, we’ll be coming together as a school to have our Christmas dinner, for which our talented Catering Team have come up with the following scrumptious menu!...

Sleigh of melon Christmas berries

Roast turkey, herby stuffing & chipolata sausage

Quorn fillet with cranberry & sage gravy (v)

Horbury Academy’s sticky toffee pudding with vanilla sauce

Chocolate fudge cheesecake

Christmas cracker, juice & a chocolate courtesy of Horbury Churches Together

Students who wish to order a Christmas dinner should let their form tutor know, if they haven’t already done so. The cost is £2.10 and this will be deducted from the accounts of those who have opted for a dinner as they go through the till on the day – this means if they haven’t ordered a Christmas dinner in advance, they can still decide to have one on the day. Students eligible for free school meals will receive their Christmas meal as normal, at no cost.

And finally…

We’re almost half way through the PPEs and students seem to be getting into the swing of them! Good luck everyone…the end is in sight!
