Bursting with Christmas talent!

Auditions for Horbury’s Got Christmas Talent have been taking place over the last couple of weeks and I can now announce the three acts from each House that have made it to the final!…..

Africa House: Hamza Mirza, Kendall and Kacey-Marie Harrison, Maja Jakubek and Treasure Mariine.

Americas House: Oliver Hamilton and Daniel Menzer, Sian Spence and Joshua McIntosh.

Asia House: Sarah Kirby, Evie Mansfield-Smith and Hope Leighton.

Europe House: Tanisha Drummond Bateman, Megan Kelly and Megan Coe, Samantha Kirk, Riannon McGinty and Bryony Shaw.

Horbury’s Got Christmas Talent is taking place on Tuesday 19th December at 7pm and families are welcome to join us.

Seasonal treats, including homemade mince pies and Christmas gingerbread, along with tea, coffee and juice will be available. Our catering team have also been busy making our legendary sticky toffee pudding which can be purchased for £2.50, as well as cookie parcels, on offer for £1.

Seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Students can reserve seats at Student Support, by Friday 15th December. Entry is free, however, there will be a charity collection during the evening and the money raised will be donated to Wakefield Hospice.

Hope to see you there!

What to expect in extreme weather…

With a forecast of snow for this weekend, here’s a reminder of what to expect in extreme weather.

In bad weather, we do always try to keep the Academy open and we value the support of our families in this. That said, the safety of our community is the most important consideration, therefore in circumstances of exceptional weather we may need to close the Academy. We would only consider this option after taking into consideration the safety of the site and of all the journeys undertaken.

We know that it is important to communicate early with families and we try to make any decision to close before students have started their journey. If we have to close, we will reach you via:

We will also formally notify Wakefield Council who would post this on their school closure web page, from which local radio stations read out lists of closed schools. Our experience is, however, that this is not always reliable, so please check the information sources directly from us.

If there are no ‘closure’ messages, then you should assume Horbury Academy is open as usual.

Thank you for your continued cooperation.

LRC Advent Calendar Competition

Well done to Evie Allsop and Nancy Whitehead who have won the LRC Advent Calendar Competition! Take a look at their fabulous homemade calendars, displayed on the equally fabulous Christmas Fireplace – made out of books! The amount of time and effort that went into both calendars is clear to see!...

Fancy joining the LRC Scratch Club?!

Our LRC is currently recruiting for a new after school club, open to all students.

The Scratch Club will use coding to create animations with the eventual aim being to produce a series of animations based on school themes such as bullying, good behaviour and anything else the students can come up with!

If this is for you, just call into the LRC and put your name down as soon as possible, or email

Festive offerings…

With Christmas on the horizon, next week our restaurant will be offering hot turkey baguettes with cranberry stuffing and gravy for £1.90, or for £2.10 with the addition of water or a fruit juice cuplet. There’s also the option to go large for £2.60 with a large drink and a christmas cookie or melon sleigh bells! Christmas cookies are also available to buy separately (70p) if you want to get Santa a treat!!

And finally…

A huge well done to Chloe Bosah who passed her Horse Care Course with flying colours this week getting an unbeatable 100%!! We’re very proud of you Chloe!

I’ve received a lovely letter from the Wakefield Model Railway Exhibition Manager about our very own Jay Hargreaves who, as part of his scout group, helped out at their recent exhibition. I’m told Jay was very helpful and a credit to his unit. Good work Jay!

Look at this creative Maths homework produced by Miss Tyrell’s Year 7 class. The brief was to produce something amazing about circles, being as creative as possible!
