Headteacher's Blog 22 - Friday 2nd March 2018

Thank you

The most important message today is a message of thanks. Thank you to you all for your support and understanding this week when it has been necessary to close the Academy due to such adverse weather conditions.

As you will be aware, I don’t take the decision to close lightly. There are lots of factors to take into consideration - most importantly, the safety of our students and staff. This was ultimately what led to the decision to close and to remain closed. I do apologise for the disruption caused in doing so. Thank you again.

World Book Day

Well, I considered dressing as the Wicked Witch of the West for World Book Day this year, until the Beast from the East came along and ruined the day!

Our Great Hall was all decorated and our Gillyweed Soup and Hogsmeade Fizz were ready to be sampled, however, students in Year 10 and 11 start their PPEs next week, and of course (I can hear the groans already) these must take priority. Stay tuned, for updates on how we plan to celebrate our love of reading instead.

Good luck in your PPE exams!

Preparations for our forthcoming PPEs began in earnest at the start of this week with some student conferences for GCSE maths, English and science. Sadly, due to the snow, some of the other subject conferences that were planned had to be cancelled. I shall look to rearranging some of these for the future, so that our students don’t miss out.

On Monday, Year 11 took part in a ‘5 Steps to Exam Success’ programme, courtesy of Study Skills Zone, to help them to become exam-ready. I hope that the advice they gave you, as well as access to the Study Apps and revision guides your teachers have given you, kept you busy whilst it snowed! Please also check Show my Homework, as I know some teachers have added resources on there for you to use this weekend.

PPEs on Monday 5th March will run as per the published timetable – so no excuses for not revising!....Good luck to both Year 10 and 11 in your PPEs... I know that you will “be like Cliff – and fly high.”

Up for an adventure?...

Aged between 13 and 19, live in Horbury or Horbury Bridge, and fancy a free adventure course in the summer holidays? Then this is for you...

Outwood Bound are offering places on their week-long residential, Serious Adventure Course, as well as their three week residential, Skills for Life Course, at one of the three Outward Bound Centres across the country.

No previous experience is required and no specialist equipment is needed, just a willingness to take on a new challenge and make new friends in the great outdoors. If you’re already on Duke of Edinburgh, the residential qualification can be incorporated into these courses.

If you want to have a chat about what it entails, we have a number of students who have previously completed these courses that are willing to talk to you about what to expect. Alternatively you can speak to Miss Gibbs or visit the Outward Bound website

Mouth-watering menus!

Next week, our talented Catering Team are trying out some new, simple and versatile food-to-go, namely Cone Bakes! Grab yours for £1.90 (or £2.10 with a water or juice cuplet) and choose from the following fillings; chicken tikka, Quorn sausages and mash, cauliflower cheese, Asian sticky chicken, or butter bean and vegetable.

We’ll also be providing free brain food for students sitting their PPE exams in the form of a bacon, sausage, or Quorn sausage sandwich, or toast, with an orange or apple cuplet. Water will also be provided throughout the exams to keep you going for longer!

Keeping Your Child Safe On-Line

No doubt many students have used the time away from school as an excuse to go On-Line. A handy resource for parents and carers to support On-Line safety can be found here
