Spotlight on Attendance

One of my weekly highlights is the email sent to all form tutors and Senior Leaders from Mrs Jagger one of our attendance officers. Mrs Jagger always lets us know what she’s been up to in her free time, providing excellent recommendations for days out and cinema reviews! Her weekly emails have inspired me to see Eddie the Eagle and feel most sorry that I didn’t venture to the Harrogate Flower Show. However, the main purpose of her emails is to share the weekly attendance data and remind all of us how important having “first class” attendance is.

To celebrate excellent attendance we carry out a termly prize draw for students. Last term’s prize winners are listed below. Congratulations to each of them – they are “flying high!”

In Year Seven the prize winners were as follows: Gold Bethan Elsworth, Silver Troy Ramsden and Bronze was won by Joe Eyre.

In Year Eight the prize winners were as follows: Gold Calista Lockwood, Silver Mary Murphy and Bronze was won by Emilie Wiper.

In Year Nine the prize winners were as follows: Gold Aaron Daley, Silver Alex Barlow and Bronze was won by Joe Killey.

In Year Ten the prize winners were as follows: Gold James Kilbank, Silver Jack Reynolds and Bronze was won by Kallum Davis.

In Year Eleven the prize winners were as follows: Gold Harmanpreet Gill, Silver Elliot Backhouse and Bronze Connor McKeenan.

Attendance has improved from last week and our figure came in at 95.40 from the previous week of 94.87. Year 7 completely smashed it with their figure of 97.33 and drum roll……had 2 forms with 100%! Congratulations to Venezuela and Bolivia who have enjoyed some tasty treats courtesy of the Attendance Team.

Talented Writers

We have recently received the complimentary copy of the Spine Chillers Anthology which has the work of two students from Mrs Ellis’ creative writing workshop: Jemima Wilson and Tanisha Drummond-Bateman. This is for their mini sagas. It came with a lovely letter from the company thanking us for our entries and the anthology has a beautiful, glossy cover. We’ve looked over the other schools who entered (we were one of twenty one schools to enter) and it seems we might be the only school from Yorkshire!

Another talented writer is Isabelle Lindley who has found out that she has got to the next stage of the 500 word competition run by BBC Radio Two. We have a history of our students doing well in this competition and wait with our fingers crossed to hear how Isabelle gets on.

Years 8 and 9 Reports

Students in Years 8 and 9 have today received their reports for this academic year. There are some fantastic achievements which show what a talented group of students we have. I encourage all parents and carers to read through this report with your son or daughter and praise their achievements and support as necessary.

Options Allocations for 2016-17

All current Year 8 and 9 students have today received confirmation of their option courses for next academic year from their form tutors. Year 10 will receive theirs on Monday morning. Students will start their new timetables in September 2016.

Term Dates for 2016-17

Our term dates and holidays for next year are now confirmed and are available on our website here.

Sporting News

Netball continues to be a real strength at Horbury Academy! Mrs Beaumont’s excellent coaching has ensured that our Year 8 Netball Team achieved wonderful success in the Wakefield Metropolitan District Schools’ Netball Association Tournament. Runners-up medals and certificates go to Lucy Squires, Helen Butler, Cloe Tomlinson, Emily Kershaw, Eve Hodgson Whitworth, Samantha Whitworth, Kacey-Marie Harrison, Tiya Harewood and Isabelle Lindley.

The group played for four hours! The results from their matches are below:

  • Outwood B - we won 14 – 0
  • Silcoates - we won 4 – 2
  • St Wilfrid’s - we won 3 – 2
  • Freeston - we won 5- 3
  • Ossett - we won 5 – 1

This meant we were in the semi-final against Outwood A who we beat 5 -4! The team then had to play WGHS in the final, where we were unfortunately beaten 12 – 3.

And finally …

Sticking with the sporting theme! I do hope that lots of you manage to get out and see some of the Tour De Yorkshire as the cyclists make their way through our region this weekend. Let’s hope the weather is kind to them and us as we enjoy the Bank Holiday!
