Headteacher’s Blog 29 – Friday 6th May

Did you know?

Did you know that despite it being a four day week students across all year groups have been busy learning inside and outside the classroom?!

Did you know that the year 10 and year 11 BTEC Construction students were invited onto one of Keepmoat’s working development sites so they could experience what it is like to be on a live construction site?! This was an invaluable experience for the students and with their final exam coming up on Wednesday 18th May, provided a unique revision and refresher tool. We want to thank staff at Keepmoat and Northern Regeneration for making this possible and wish the students luck for their final exam and getting those crucial assignments completed.

Did you know that our Year 9 food students were put into groups to create a theme and product to sell at a pop up food stall?  The groups then took part in a competition where they had four weeks to develop their recipe and practice making it.  This week the final dishes were made and Horbury Academy’s very own John Torode and Gregg Wallace enjoyed judging them, claiming that they were “Delicious!”

Did you know in year 7 history lessons students have not only learnt about castles but they have had to design and market a castle especially for me!  I had great fun visiting Mr Care’s history lesson this morning to see what they’d come up with.  Their presentations ranged from models of castles, a sword, booklets, leaflets, a video, a voice recording, banners and more!  Although I shall enjoy living in my Spurs themed castle, some of my favourite names included “Chateau De Yorkshire” and “Chateau De Amore.”

Sporting Heroes

Congratulations go to two of our students who have had sporting success beyond Horbury Academy.  The first student is Shamus Harrison who spent last weekend competing in a large athletics competition in Manchester. Out of 3 events he proceeded to bag himself two silver medals; one in 200m and one in long jump!  We wish him the very best of luck in his upcoming competitions later this month.

A huge well done also goes to Bethany Walker who has been selected to attend Barnsley Gymnastics Academy.  Well done to Bethany, we look forward to celebrating your gymnastics successes!

Amazing Artists

You may remember in a previous blog I asked for you to support our students who entered the Hepworth Gallery’s photographic competition entitled My Secret Wakefield.  It is with great pride that I can share with you that the winner of the Key Stage 3 prize is our very own Alisha Thompson.  Congratulations Alisha!  Her winning picture is below.

Safeguarding Information

Keeping our students safe is of upmost importance to us all.  I also know first-hand how difficult it is as parents/carers to keep abreast of the challenges young people face today.  Details of a useful website have come into the Academy and I would encourage you to take a look by visiting http://parentinfo.org/.  The website includes information on topics ranging from “You Tube – what every parent should know” to self-harm.

Please, if you have any concerns or worries about your child don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Robinson, our Child Protection Officer.
