Open Evening 2017

We had the privilege of welcoming over 800 people to our 2017 Open Evening which took place this Wednesday for Year 5 and 6 pupils and their parents and carers.

All visitors were greeted by our Year 11 Prefects and had the opportunity to experience a multitude of activities and events designed to give them a flavour of life at Horbury Academy.

A special, personal, thank you goes to Madeleine Dickenson-Brown, Nida Nasir and Austin Jones who undertook their first official duties as Head Boy and Head Girls. Their speeches were not only informative and moving but proved to me yet again how talented and wonderful our students are.

If any parents of prospective students require any further information about the Academy or transition please don’t hesitate to contact Assistant Headteacher, Mr Care, who oversees this and will be happy to help with your enquiries.

Attendance matters…

As I outlined in my presentation to prospective parents on Wednesday, we take attendance very seriously at Horbury Academy. We began this term with brilliant attendance and for the first two weeks almost every form group had 100% attendance. However, this is slowly declining because some parents/carers have taken their child on holiday in term time. Please, re-read the Academy’s policy on Holidays in Term Time which can be accessed from our main website.

Students will be pleased to hear that after October half term the attendance team will be re-instating their 100% award, for any form, that achieves 100% attendance for a week. The forms not only get a lovely certificate to display on their noticeboards, but also a bag of goodies to share!

Year 7 Parents’ Welcome Evening

We’ll be hosting our Year 7 Parents’ Welcome Evening on Wednesday 27th September, from 6.30pm until 8pm.

The purpose of this meeting is for parents and carers of Year 7 students to gain information in ways to support their child through their Horbury journey, including an insight into the Maths and English curriculum and the chance to find out more about upcoming events.

It will also serve as an opportunity to meet with other parents and carers, as well as myself, Miss Gibbs, our Acting Head of Year 7 and other members of the Senior Leadership Team. We’re looking forward to meeting you!

Alton Towers and Chester Zoo trips

In advance of next week’s trips to Chester Zoo (Year 7) and Alton Towers (Years 8 to 11), you will shortly be receiving your personalised coach pass. Each pass provides information about the timings of the day, what you need to take and a reminder of our expectations regarding behaviour. You can download yours here.

If you would like to order a packed lunch for either visit, please complete an order form which can be found at the till points in the Atrium Café and Restaurant. Grab bags cost £2.10 and are available to order until break time on Thursday 28th September. Lunch orders for those on the Alton Towers trip will be delivered to the coaches. Chester Zoo lunch orders will be delivered to the Main Hall and Form Tutors will check that all Year 7 students have a lunch for their trip.

Please note that for those students who did not receive an invitation to Alton Towers, or who opted out of the visit, the Academy day will run as normal albeit with a varied timetable of lessons. Students staying in the Academy will need to wear full uniform and bring with them their usual equipment.

…now all that’s left to do is pray it doesn’t rain!

Show My Homework

We are delighted to continue to use Show My Homework for students, parents and carers to able to see what homework has been set and when it is due to be handed in. All parental logins have been reissued via students’ form teachers for students in Years 8 to 11 and their ICT teacher for those in Year 7.  Student logins have changed so that they can now login using their Academy email address and network password.

We are aware that some students, particularly those in Year 7, have been unable to login but this is now resolved as of today and every student in the Academy should have a working account. Further details are available here and support is available by emailing should you encounter any further login problems.

And finally…

We received the very sad news this week that a former Horbury Academy teacher has passed away. Eddie Robinson, was a much loved Maths teacher here in the 80's.

If you knew Eddie and would like to attend his funeral, his family would love to see you there at 9.40am on Wednesday at Pontefract Crematorium.
