A busy day for Horbury Academy!

It’s been unusually quiet at school today… as we’re all out day tripping!

Year 7 are having a fabulous day at Chester Zoo whilst the rest of us are having an adrenaline-filled day at Alton Towers!! I’ll be sure to post some photos next week!

Welcome Evening

Our Welcome Evening for parents and carers of our new Year 7 students took place this Wednesday. You can find the information provided on the evening here.

Auditions coming soon…

Fancy appearing in our production of High School Musical in March?!

Student auditions are set to take place on Tuesday 10th October, from 3pm to 4pm for general roles or from 4pm to 5pm for the principle roles.

If you’d like to audition for one of the principle roles, please prepare the first verse and chorus of ‘Start of Something New’. Please see Mr Ray, Miss Fisher or Miss Booth for further information.

Super STEM start to the term!

Our STEM club and initiatives have hit the ground running this academic year and had a very popular presence at our Open Evening last week! They’re already building Lego and re-designing their robot, Horace, for the First Lego League…. they have to come up with a project to present at Sheffield University in December when they compete with their robot against other schools!

We also have students eager to start working on Teen Tech 2018.  After Nicole Hirst’s amazing success this year (and 3 groups making it to the finals in 2016), the students are determined to make their projects those chosen few that will get them to the Royal Society in London next summer to meet VIPs such as Professor Brian Cox and Evan Davis.

This week also sees the launch of TALENT 2030. This is a girl’s-only engineering competition for ages 11 to 18 where girls need to consider how engineers can solve the challenges of the 21st Century. Prizes up to £1000 can be won as well as a trip to the Big Bang at the NEC in Birmingham in March for the finals.

Amazing opportunities for our amazing students – I’m sure we’ll have plenty of entries for each of these competitions - good luck to all students who enter!

Breakfast club delights!

We’re offering a free slice of toast with a choice of hot toppings at next week’s breakfast club to warm you up as the mornings start to get colder.

Just visit the Restaurant between 8am and 8.30am and choose between beans, tomatoes or poached egg to accompany your toast. You can also add a juice cuplet for 30p or a milk carton for 40p to kick start your day!

PiXL Perfect!

This week, I had the pleasure of presenting the first PiXL Edge Awards of this academic year to the following students; Ella Boote, William Buntin, Jaran Craig, Joe Eyre, Majandra Kohlhepp, Kiran Lawn, Gabriella Mitchell and Molly Watson.

Go Team Horbury!

Our under 16’s football team played exceptionally well yesterday, with a 5-0 win against St Thomas à Becket and a 1-1 draw against Ossett Academy! Well done to the whole team and in particular to our goal scorers, Leah Pearman and Tiya Harewood!

And finally…

Our very own Kacey-Marie Harrison has qualified to compete in four dances at the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing UK Grand Final on 9th October! Kacey is an amazing dancer, as evidenced by this achievement! Good luck Kacey - we’re rooting for you!
