Sexting and the Law

In the UK the age of consent for sexual intercourse is 16, however, it is an offence to make, distribute, possess or show any indecent images of anyone aged under 18, even if the content was created with the consent of that young person.

It is important that we all understand the dangers of sexting and know what to do to help a young person who has received or sent an explicit image, video or message.

It may feel awkward, but it's important to explain to young people the risks of sexting, how to stay safe and to remind them that they can talk to you if something ever makes them feel scared or uncomfortable.

Find out how to talk to young people about the risks of sexting and what you can do to protect them here.
